One year isn’t a particularly long time, but in the year or so I’ve been covering sports from Molalla to Colton, I feel like I’ve experienced plenty.
I’ve covered winless teams and state champions; I’ve seen parents yell at coaches and parents recognize coaches for putting in more effort than what their paycheck shows; I’ve seen athletes laugh and athletes cry; I saw blowouts and buzzer-beaters; I covered track on the most beautiful of days and a football game in a monsoon; I’ve seen kids raise money through athletics for wells in Africa; I covered games in the middle of nowhere and a track meet on the Mecca of track and field, Hayward Field; I even got caught in a Gatorade bath in the final game I covered this season, which seemed almost fitting.

Farewell to a friend
To the editor:
Well after only a year covering the sports of the area, our local sports editor Colin Storm is moving on. He blames us of course, unfortunately in a good way, so we can't even get mad at him.
Covering the kids and getting to know the coaches and parents made him realize how much he missed being involved in that way.

I don't know why I can't stay awake through — well, pretty much anything. It's getting so I fall asleep all the time. Everywhere.I am getting a bad reputation for being unable to stay awake through movies, TV shows, ballgames, concerts, plays, dental appointments and even conversations between the other person who lives at our house and myself involving things I ought to be doing to make our lives better.

Granted, the Molalla City Council — which is also the Molalla Urban Renewal Agency — has some new members this year, and urban renewal is probably something of a mystery to them. On the same note, the city hall staff feels a bit overwhelmed, what with interim city managers filling in, and no new full-time replacement yet on board. But the city staff is paid by the citizens of Molalla to take care of city business, and the councilors have been provided with an offer of assistance on urban renewal matters from Canby City Administrator Greg Ellis.

Someone once said, “Things are either done or they’re done to you.” When it comes to economic development, Molalla needs someone who can get things done.My board once described me as the Lee Iacocca of economic development. You know, “Lead, follow or get the heck out of the way.” I accept this mantle because Molalla deserves someone willing to go to bat for the city, someone willing to use every ounce of knowledge, expertise and contacts at her disposal to take us to the next level.

Sometimes I get the feeling that I'm the only person my age who is not retired.I know that isn't really true (and I don't even believe it's entirely bad), but it does seem that way.At 65, I'm wise enough to know that I really should wait another year or two at least before hanging up the old keyboard and turning to more respectable activities, like full-time busking in the downtown area, volunteering in the local schools or just, you know, stalking people for the adventure of it.
