Molalla man leads police on 100 mph chase

A Molalla man faces multiple charges after leading police on a car chase along Interstate 5 and Oregon 217 Saturday morning.

Oregon State Police Recruit Trooper Nigel Schnackenberg noticed Braulio Hernandez-Lopez, 28, of Molalla driving a 2007 Chevrolet Equinox in an erratic matter on I-5 and attempted to pull him over around 9:24 a.m., according to an OSP press release.

Instead of stopping, police said Hernandez-Lopez sped up to more than 80 miles per hour, continuing on northbound I-5 near Nyberg Road. Schnackenberg followed Hernandez-Lopez onto northbound Oregon 217 at speeds sometimes exceeding 100 mph.

Hernandez-Lopez continued his attempt to elude, even after striking another car, driven by Joseph Bernard, 46, of Portland. Bernard was not injured in the collision.

Hernandez-Lopez took the Canyon Road off ramp and the Beaverton Police Department took over the pursuit.

The Equinox hit a van at Farmington Road and Lombard Avenue and became stuck on the railroad tracks, where police were able to arrest Hernandez-Lopez, according to OSP.

The van’s driver, Maria Mendiola-Osequeda, 41, of Beaverton, and her two passengers were transported to Providence St. Vincent Hospital with minor injuries.

Hernandez-Lopez was also transported to Providence where he was treated and released to police custody.

He is being lodged at the Washington County Jail. He is charged with attempt to elude police, three counts of Assault III, DUII, hit and run, Assault IV, two counts of criminal mischief and resisting arrest.
