There was no doubt to anyone watching the West Valley League at Amity High School Friday night that the field conditions played a part in the outcome. In a showdown for fourth place in the West Valley League standings, the visiting Colton Vikings and host Amity Warriors (3-3, 5-4) could not hang on to the ball amongst the mud pit that was called a football field.

The West Valley League might be the toughest league in the conference: they boast four top-10 teams in the state and all three teams that went to the state tournament have advanced rather easily into the quarterfinals.

After a 2011 season that ended in the first round of the league tournament, the Colton Vikings looked to take this season a step further.But after a slow start — going just 1-4 in their first four league matches — the Vikings struggled to a 4-10 conference record.

As so often the case in running, it’s not about how you start; it’s about how you finish.The Colton cross country teams might have started the season a bit late — just the week before the Molalla Invitational — but the Hayes brothers certainly made their mark on the season for the boys team.

Unhappy with zero wins last season, the Colton Vikings worked hard in the offseason to try and remedy that.Junior Kevin Flores is the perfect example of that off-season workout.

There could be some growing pains around the Colton Vikings girls program this season as the Vikings only return three players of last year’s team. Those three returners, plus some newcomers — including junior Monica Poet, who adds height to the team, and six freshmen — will be called upon time and time again in the 2012-13 season.
