As the seconds wound down on another win for the Molalla Indians, everyone was all smiles.Everyone, that is, except head coach Jory Shene.After a 3-1 win over the Madras White Buffaloes (3-7, 3-11) to cap off an undefeated campaign in the Tri-Valley Conference, Shene gathered his team around for about five minutes after the game to warn them about complacency and their level of play.

Well, you can add the Molalla girls cross country team having success to that list.Though they did not win the league title this year, they are easily the most decorated program in the conference over the past decade, and finished just two points behind eventual state champion La Salle Prep at districts.

For many reasons, this was a forgettable season for the Molalla Indians football team. An already young team was stricken by the injury bug, meaning an already inexperienced team had to go to the reserves.

It was just over a year ago that Anthony Keller was hired to revive a program on the brink of extinction because of budget issues. However, it was the Molalla River School District that decided to recommend the program should continue.

There could be some growing pains around the Colton Vikings girls program this season as the Vikings only return three players of last year’s team. Those three returners, plus some newcomers — including junior Monica Poet, who adds height to the team, and six freshmen — will be called upon time and time again in the 2012-13 season.

There was no doubt to anyone watching the West Valley League at Amity High School Friday night that the field conditions played a part in the outcome. In a showdown for fourth place in the West Valley League standings, the visiting Colton Vikings and host Amity Warriors (3-3, 5-4) could not hang on to the ball amongst the mud pit that was called a football field.

After a 2011 season that ended in the first round of the league tournament, the Colton Vikings looked to take this season a step further.But after a slow start — going just 1-4 in their first four league matches — the Vikings struggled to a 4-10 conference record.
